"Our collective heart breaks over the senseless tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School today," said StudentsFirst Connecticut State Director Jeri Powell. "StudentsFirst mourns the innocent victims of the shooting and sends our condolences to their families and to the entire community of Newtown, Connecticut. Places of learning must serve as safe havens for every child across our country, and violence must not be tolerated in our schools."

Big grant will promote Hartford school, charter ties

Hartford public schools will receive a $5 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The grant will strengthen the city's ties to charter schools. Hartford will be one of seven U.S. cities to receive a grant to promote the collaboration between charters and traditional public schools.
